In 1995, Volvo shelved the unique 850 Estate and replaced it with the 850 20v. None of their drivers were retained for 1995 and subsequently hired rookie Sam Mumby. Unfortunately, a team-mate was not found for the season and Volvo would only enter one car. Mumby would miss the first race of the season at Brands Hatch but would compete in all 9 remaining rounds after that. The season would prove to be a difficult one with Mumby finishing a lowly 13th in the Drivers standings and Volvo finishing a disappointing 7th in the constructors.
For 1996, Mumby would be retained. But would be joined at the Swedish outfit by rookie Chris Pimm. Volvo hopes with the new partnership that they can progress forward from their disappointing 1995 campaign.
